Domaine Pierre Thibert Chorey Les Beaune 2015
Pierre Thibert is a ‘garagiste’ no more!  And we’re here to report on big changes in this small-production, top-quality, self-made domain.  Pierre and his wife, Aline, have accomplished what many say is no longer possible in Burgundy: they built a solid family domain, a world-class reputation and a sophisticated style over the course of a single generation. They created something out of nothing! Delicate and supple, rich and full of Pinot Noir character. Crimson with classic red and black fruits set off by earth and spice. Good and subtle tannic structure finishing long on fruit.

Michel Arcelain Bourgogne 2013
This Bourgogne will stop you in your tracks.  Like so many regional appellation wines from small, proud production domains, the grapes for this wine come from a vineyard in the village where the producer lives and work.  In this case…it’s Pommard. This is no big-volume blend Bourgogne like you get from the negociant houses.  No, you’ll swear that this is a little Pommard.  And that’s how it should be!

Jean Jacques Girard Bourgogne Rouge 2014
Jean-Jacques Girard's family has been making wine in the Savigny-les Beaune valley for 500 years, so it's not surprising to find that his regional appellation Bourgogne Rouge drinks like a little Savigny. Blackcurrant freshness, a touch of earth subsoil, a supple, easy structure and bull's-eye line on through the whole from the attack to the finish.

Domaine Borgeot Santenay Vieilles Vignes 2015
Year in, year out, this Borgeot Santenay 'Vieilles Vignes' is one of our favorites. We've been drinking this wine consistently since we first met Pascal Borgeot back in 1989. The first Borgeot wine we tasted was his Santenay VV in the 1985 vintage. It was beautiful even in its youth, and we drank it lustily. Have done ever since. Pascal surprised us a few years back with a secret stash of the 1985, and we re-lived our youth in a glass. This is our image of Pinot Noir from the Cotes de Beaune. It ranks as one of the best deals in Red Burgundy on this site...which explains why it is always among the first to sell out.

Capitain Gagnerot Ladoix 1er Cru 'La Micaude' 2015
The Capitain Ladoix 1er Cru 'La Micaude' is a 'monople', meaning they own the entire 4 acres of vines themselves. This is and has been for nearly 30 years, our benchmark Pinot Noir. Roger Capitain used this wine to show us that if you are looking for color in Pinot Noir, you are asking the wrong question.  He showed us here that a wine can be delicate and powerful at the same time, And he showed us that pretty little red fruits can age as well (and usually better) than concentrated extracted fruit bombs.  Racy and well-structured, 'La Micaude' is at the same time discreet with delicate black berry fruits. It's one of those wine that will surprise you as it ages, growing in elegance and nuance with each passing year.

Domaine Mouton Givry 1er Cru 'Clos Jus' 2015
Domaine Mouton's aptly-named 'Clos Jus' ('jus' means 'juice') is the Mouton wine we go to first. Always ripe and juicy, ready to drink relatively early. Minerality is the key here, from a vineyard with different soil make-up to the rest of the appellation. Dark fruit, earth notes, delicate structure fleshed out to fullness. We appreciate the finesse in the winemaking, an unstinting perfectionism that has been communicated across a generation. The self-effacing Moutons would be the last to admit it, but for us their wines are nearly always perfect.
