DOMAINE BORGEOT 2016 MIXED CASE
Here are our benchmark Domaine Borgeot wines (well, most of them) in the exceptional 2016 vintage.
It's a mixed 12 bottle case, 6 different wines, 2 bottles of each plus ground shipping included:
Santenay 1er Cru 'Gravieres' White 2016
Santenay 1er Cru 'Les Gravieres' can be either red or white. 'Gravieres' implies gravel, loose stony soil. And the upper part of the vineyard is such. This is excellent soil for Chardonnay, with one of the best expositions in the southern Cote d'Or. Mineral and smoky, lemongrass acidity, dead-center structure, this is a Borgeot white par excellence.
Chassagne-Montrachet 'Vieilles Vignes' 2016
The Domaine Borgeot makes one of the purest and most consistent styles in Chassagne-Montrachet today. This village Chassagne comes from 50 year old vines, and it's fat. But by no means flabby. With orange flower richness and dusty minerality and good acidity to hold it all in suspension, this wine (as is often the case with Borgeot wines) drinks way above its appellation. There is a spiciness that almost reminds you of muscat, but the structure says Borgeot.
Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru 'Clos St Jean' White 2016
From one of the best Chassagne-Montrachet white premier cru vineyards, sitting right below the village quarry, this ‘Clos St Jean leads with its sublime minerality. Bright gold in color. Youthful exotic fruit going towards grilled almonds. Elegant and well-balanced. Great long finished carrier through by the mineralty.
Puligny-Montrachet 'Les Grands Champs' 2016
The ‘Golden triangle’ of great white Burgundy is Meursault, Chassagne-Montrachet and, arguably the finest of the three, Puligny-Montrachet. This single-vineyard village appellation is a wine of great finesse and elegance. Pure and bright, with glints of white gold. Orchard blossoms and peaches make the bouquet. Silky and long, ending on both flowers and fruit.
Bourgogne Rouge 2016
Domaine Borgeot Bourgogne Rouge is one wine that is always in our cellar. In fact, it's our 'house red'! This is one of the paradigms of what we call 'everyday drinking Burgundy'. Classic youthful Burgundy Pinot Noir with blackberries and strawberries and that earthiness that keeps you coming back. It is as we claim: you can drink Burgundy every day. This one should be in your cellar too. Pull it out, guilt free and often!
Santenay 1er Cru 'Gravieres' Red 2016
Not surprisingly, this Borgeot Santenay 1er Cru 'Gravieres' red comes from the same vineyard as their Santenay 1er 'Gravieres' white, just further down the slope where the soil becomes denser and red. ‘Gravieres’ is one vineyard with two different soil types, apt for two different wines. Sadly, many producers have succumbed to the temptation of the bottom line, and have replanted Chardonnay where there should be Pinot Noir. But not the Borgeots! Their 'Gravieres' red is their signature Pinot, with ripe dark fruits tinged with chocolate and coffee, rich, powerful and fat right through the lingering note of pure blackberry.
